Denver, CO – Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) and Conservation Colorado Victory Fund are calling out three of Colorado’s most anti-environmental candidates: U.S. Senate candidate Darryl Glenn, U.S. Rep. Mike Coffman, and state Senator Laura Woods.

LCV is naming Senate candidate Daryl Glenn and Congressional candidate Rep. Mike Coffman to its signature “Dirty Dozen” list. LCV is also announcing a $225,000 mail program to defeat Rep. Coffman in Colorado’s 6th Congressional district. Consisting of seven mail pieces, and targeting nearly 52,000 households, this mail campaign details the dangerous climate denialism of the Trump/Coffman ticket, as well as Coffman’s terrible environmental record. Coffman has a terrible 5 percent on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard, but his opponent, state Senator Morgan Carroll, has a 98 percent record on Conservation Colorado’s scorecard.

“Coffman and Glenn have more than earned their place next to Donald Trump on our Dirty Dozen list – they are far outside the mainstream, deny the facts on climate change, and fully support the agenda of their Big Polluter allies,” said LCV National Campaigns Director Clay Schroers. “This ticket is a threat to the health of Colorado’s families, whether due to their opposition to investments in a clean energy economy or their policies that would take us backwards in the fight against climate change. None of these candidates are fit for public office.”

As recently as this week, Glenn doubled down on his climate skepticism, tellingan audience that the climate “could be changing.”

For 20 years, the Dirty Dozen has targeted candidates— regardless of party affiliation — who consistently side against the environment and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. Last cycle, LCV defeated seven of the 12 Dirty Dozen candidates. In the last presidential year of 2012, LCV defeated 11 of 12.

Conservation Colorado Victory Fund, LCV’s state league partner, is naming Sen. Laura Woods to “Dirty Dozen in the States.” The group is also announcing additional investments in their six-figure program to defeat Woods in state Senate District 19.  The program includes mail, digital, and canvasses, which will focus on Woods’ terrible record on protecting Colorado’s public lands and air quality. Featured in the digital ad buy is a video entitled “Left Behind,” detailing how Woods voted for a plan that could limit hunting and fishing on our public lands. Woods has a lifetime score of nine percent on Conservation Colorado’s annual legislative scorecard, a record which includes voting against public lands protections, to roll back solar and wind energy, to defund important air quality protections, and to limit the state’s ability to hold polluters accountable for contaminating drinking water.

“Senator Laura Woods has one of the worst records that we’ve ever seen in our state legislature,” said Pete Maysmith, Executive Director of Conservation Colorado. “Whether it’s throwing her support behind efforts that could result in our public lands being split up and sold off, or voting to gut our state clean air agency’s budget, Laura Woods has consistently put polluters above people. Families and communities in SD-19 need new leadership, and Rachel Zenzinger is ready to take on that mantle and fight for them.    

Thirty state Conservation Voter partners are working to determine this election cycle’s “Dirty Dozen in the States.” The candidates named are some of the most anti-environment politicians running in competitive state-level races for governor, state senate or state house this cycle. Last cycle, state LCVs defeated seven of the twelve “Dirty Dozen in the States” candidates.

The “Dirty Dozen in the States” is modeled after LCV’s “Dirty Dozen,” which has targeted candidates for federal office (with occasional exceptions)— regardless of party affiliation — who consistently side against the environment, and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. LCV has named candidates to the Dirty Dozen for twenty years.
