LCV Action Fund Endorses Congresswoman Alma Adams for Re-election

Mar 10, 2016

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Alma Adams for re-election to Congress (NC-12).  During her first term in Congress, Congresswoman Adams has consistently supported critical clean energy initiatives and public health protections.

“We are thrilled to support Congresswoman Adams in her re-election campaign—as a first-term Congresswoman, she’s shown compelling dedication to combating climate change,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski.  “She is already taking a leading role in protecting public health and fighting for clean water and air.”

“Having spent over 20 years in public service, Congresswoman Adams is deeply familiar with the environmental concerns and needs of her constituents,” said North Carolina League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Carrie Clark. “North Carolinians can trust that she will continue to fight to protect our land and water, which is important to our way of life.”

“As a vocal advocate for environmental protections in Congress and in the North Carolina General Assembly, I am honored to have the continued support of the League of Conservation Voters,” said Adams. “Environmental issues tend to have the greatest impact on poor and minority communities, so that’s why it’s important that we never stop fighting to combat climate change, curb pollution, invest in renewable energy, and promote sustainable development solutions.”

As a member of the Congressional Safe Climate Caucus, Adams has helped push for important policies to combat climate change, and voted against radical attacks on the Clean Power Plan—the single largest step our nation has taken to combat climate change. Given the disastrous coal ash spill in the Dan River, the first amendment Adams introduced as a Member of Congress was to regulate toxic coal ash pollution.

Prior to serving in Congress, Adams spent over two decades in the North Carolina House of Representatives, where she fought for legislation that would have funded loans for energy efficiency and renewable energy projects and would have also created incentives for customers to purchase Energy Star household products.

Adams earned an impressive 97 percent score on LCV’s 2015 National Environmental Scorecard, the first year she was in Congress. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
