Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Darren Soto for Congress in Florida’s 9th District.

“Representative Darren Soto understands the threats that climate change poses to Florida and the entire country and is working hard to transition to a clean energy future,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We need his leadership in Congress now more than ever to combat the climate crisis and protect our air, water and lands. We are delighted to endorse him for reelection.”

“Congressman Soto has been a champion for Florida’s environment since his days in the state legislature,” said Florida Conservation Voters Executive Director Aliki Moncrief. “Floridians know we can trust him to stand up to polluter special interests in defense of the Everglades and the beautiful rivers and waterways that are critical to our economy and way of life. We look forward to continuing to work with Darren Soto to protect Florida’s beauty for future generations.”

“LCV is leading conservationists who are fighting to keep our air and water clean, protect endangered species, and stop reckless drilling and pollution. I’m thrilled to stand with them in this fight and am honored to have the support of LCV Action Fund,” said Representative Darren Soto. “As a member of the Natural Resources Committee, I have fiercely opposed offshore oil drilling and fracking proposals and other attempts to weaken environmental laws and regulations. I passed a law to protect us from foreign oil spills, and a bill out of the U.S. House to protect the Kissimmee River which flows into the Everglades. And along with fellow Democrats, I’m holding Interior Secretary Zinke and other Trump administration officials who come before the committee accountable for their actions.”

Representative Darren Soto has been a strong advocate on climate change and other environmental issues in Congress. Using his position on the Committee on Natural Resources and the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Soto has challenged the Trump administration’s offshore drilling plans and the repeal of the Clean Power Plan. Soto has also prioritized wilderness restoration projects for the Kissimmee River and the Everglades and introduced a bill to permanently reauthorize the Land and Water Conservation Fund. Congressman Soto scored a perfect 100 percent on LCV’s 2017 National Environmental Scorecard.
