Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Ilhan Omar for Congress in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.

“Ilhan Omar has dedicated her career to serving marginalized communities who are the most likely to suffer from the dangerous impacts of climate change and pollution,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We know she will be a powerful voice in Congress for climate solutions, and we are thrilled to endorse her campaign.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, an organization leading on environmental issues,” said Ilhan Omar. “I look forward to working with LCV to protect our public health, fight for a clean energy future and combat the climate crisis.”

Born in Somalia, Ilhan and her family fled the country’s civil war when she was eight-years-old. They lived in a refugee camp in Kenya for four years before coming to the United States, eventually settling in the Cedar-Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis in 1997. Omar began her career as a community nutrition educator at the University of Minnesota, then served as a child nutrition outreach coordinator at the Minnesota Department of Education. In 2015, she became the director of policy and initiatives at the Women Organizing Women Network, which helps East African women take on civic and political leadership roles. In 2016, she ran for the Minnesota House of Representatives and became the first Somali-American legislator in the United States. Omar served as Assistant Minority Leader during her first term and consistently voted in favor of clean water and to protect clean energy and conservation funding. In Congress, she will advocate for the communities that have borne the worst effects of pollution and climate change and support investments in Minnesota’s clean energy future.
