Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Matt Longjohn for Congress in Michigan’s 6th District.

“Dr. Matt Longjohn has dedicated his career to public health and improving the lives of Michiganders,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Dr. Longjohn is a physician and public public health expert who understands that building sustainable communities is essential for our health and for economic growth. We know that he will continue to fight for those values in Congress by prioritizing the right of all to access clean air and safe water and defending our public lands and Michigan’s spectacular Great Lakes. Dr. Longjohn is the leader Michiganders in the 6th district deserve and we are proud to endorse his campaign.”

“I am proud to have earned the endorsement of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund,” said Matt Longjohn. “You can’t live your healthiest life without safe and clean air, water, or soil, and in the 6th district, our environment is also the basis of our economy. The future of tourism associated with our lakes, beaches, recreational activities, fishing, and hunting, as well as our agricultural economy, depend entirely on our efforts to protect and sustain our environment.  We need a Representative in Washington who understands how seriously to take environmental issues. Over the past several years, Congressman Fred Upton has been cashing checks from big oil and gas industries, while repeatedly voting against environmental protections that have hurt Southwest Michigan. For example, he voted to repeal the Clean Water Rule. Families from Parchment to Plainwell, and anywhere else that has been dealing with PFAS contamination, know we need more protections on our water. Though Mr. Upton talks about being a problem solver, he votes along party lines and has earned a 13% voting record on overall environmental issues. Unlike Congressman Upton I will be a staunch defender of the environment.”

Matt Longjohn was born and raised in Portage, Michigan. He graduated from Kalamazoo College and earned his medical degree from the Tulane School of Medicine and his master’s in public health from the Tulane School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. Longjohn has worked in public health and medicine throughout his career, including for the Handgun Epidemic Lowering Plan Network, the Consortium to Lower Obesity in Chicago Children, and the Altraum Institute and the YMCA. At the YMCA, he was the first-ever National Health Officer, serving the nation’s 2,700 YMCAs and impacting the health of an estimated 73 million people. For his work on the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, he was recognized by the Obama administration as one of the top innovators in health. In Congress, he will continue to be a champion for public health by fighting for clean air and clean drinking water for Michiganders.
