Washington, D.C. – In response to the Monday evening attack by law enforcement on protesters in Lafayette Park, recent reports that U.S. Park Police tasked with protecting our public lands were involved, and the ongoing movement for Black lives in the wake of the murder of George Floyd by police, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) issued the following statement from Legislative Representative Laura Forero:

“LCV condemns the Trump administration’s dangerous Monday evening attack on protesters in Washington D.C. and stands with Chairman Grijalva, Chairwoman Haaland and the House Committee on Natural Resources and House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests, and Public Lands calling for more information on the involvement of the U.S. Park Police. The Park Service should be protecting our public lands, not gassing courageous advocates. We support the movement for Black lives and protests happening around the country.

“Our organization exists to protect our planet and everyone who inhabits it  — but this work means nothing if Black communities are not safe when they’re outside in the very environment we’re fighting for. No one should fear persecution because of the color of their skin. Black lives matter. No matter what.”
