Washington, D.C. — In response to the passing of Rep. Alcee Hastings, the League of Conservation Voters issued the following statement from President Gene Karpinski:

“Congressman Hastings was a lifelong environmental champion who we will sorely miss. Hastings lived a full life of service, breaking barrier after barrier to become the first Black federal judge in Florida and the first Black member of Congress from Florida since the post-Civil War era — all the while fighting for justice and equity for all. Hastings will go down in history as a tireless advocate for people and the planet, especially the precious Everglades and all of Florida’s majestic lands and waters. Our thoughts are with the Hastings family and his staff at this difficult time.”
