LCV Statement on Trump’s State of the Union Address

Feb 6, 2019

Washington D.C. – LCV President Gene Karpinski attended tonight’s State of the Union address as a guest of Rep. Paul Tonko, (NY-20). After the address, Mr. Karpinski issued the following statement:

“Tonight, Donald Trump spoke of ‘choosing greatness’ but there is nothing great about his administration’s repeated choices to abandon U.S. leadership in the global fight against climate change, to eliminate vital protections for public lands and to roll back the clean air and water safeguards that make our communities safe and healthy places to live. And there is certainly nothing unifying about the continued lies and fearmongering he used to push for a needless and xenophobic border wall. This speech, like Trump’s presidency, was the opposite of great.

“The great news is that we have environmental champions in the House and Senate who are ready to move us toward clean, renewable energy, major investments in climate-smart infrastructure and efficiency, and a just transition for workers and communities hardest hit by pollution  New governors committed to 100 percent clean energy are already starting to follow through on those commitments. Our millions of members look forward to working with these leaders who are rolling up their sleeves to get to work solving the climate crisis and creating a brighter and more just future for everyone.”
