The New York League of Conservation Voters and LCV Action Fund Jointly Endorse Colleen Deacon for Congressional District 24

Aug 18, 2016

Washington D.C. — The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, and the New York League of Conservation Voters, which works to make environmental sustainability a top political and policy priority in New York State, jointly announced their endorsement of Colleen Deacon for election to Congress in New York’s 24th district.

The former Regional Director for Central New York under U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Colleen Deacon has a long history of protecting Central New York’s environment and advancing a sustainability agenda. Deacon was a leading force in Senator Gillibrand’s office on Brownfield redevelopment and environmental cleanup of contaminated sites along waterfronts in the region.  She also helped the Senator’s office address invasive species in Owasco Lake and Oneida Lake of Central New York.  Actively involved with the Onondaga Lake restoration act and supportive of efforts to create a Marine Sanctuary in Lake Ontario, Deacon is no stranger to rallying behind an environmental cause and taking action to develop a solution and enact change.

Deacon has pledged to be a top advocate in combatting climate change and reversing pollution from Central New York’s industrial past by upholding the Clean Air and Clean Water Acts. She is also committed to investing in clean energy technology to promote jobs in the region and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. She has also demonstrated that she will be a powerful voice for rebuilding Upstate New York’s aging infrastructure. Deacon assisted the Port of Oswego in making critical infrastructure repairs, reducing the stress on emergency crews, and building stronger connections to the community. She has also committed to making sure that the region’s pipes and sewers are properly upgraded in light of a troubling spate of water main breaks.

“I’m so honored to have the support of the New York League of Conservation Voters and the LCV Action Fund on this campaign,” said Deacon. “Here in Central New York we have seen first-hand what happens when we pollute our natural resources. We are still trying to clean what was one of the most polluted lakes in the country – Onondaga Lake, and just down the way we have one of the cleanest lakes in the country, Skaneateles Lake. I am eager to go to Congress to fight for policies that combat climate change and leave the Earth in good shape for future generations.”

“Colleen Deacon understands that clean air and water is a right, not a choice, which is why she will work hard to safeguard the air we breathe and the water we drink for our children and grandchildren,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “In Congress, she will also work tirelessly to combat climate change and create good paying jobs in the clean energy and energy efficiency sectors.”

“Central New York has the potential to emerge from its industrial path and realize a bright and environmentally sound future. Colleen Deacon has demonstrated she knows how to get us there and that she also has to experience and skills to get things done. We are proud to endorse Colleen Deacon for election to Congress, and we encourage anyone who wants to see continued growth toward a healthier and more resilient Central New York to vote for Colleen Deacon on November 8th,” said Marcia Bystryn, president of the New York League of Conservation Voters.
