Wingbeat 88, Stewardship Utah, and LCV Register Over 13,000 voters in Indigenous Communities on Navajo Nation

Oct 11, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Today, the League of Conservation Voters (LCV) announced an update that their partnership with Wingbeat 88 and Stewardship Utah has helped register 13,558 eligible voters across the Navajo Nation in Arizona and Utah to date. Together, we have helped register voters in nearly every zip code in Arizona and Utah on Navajo Nation.

“As we observe Indigenous Peoples Day, we recognize the critical leadership of Indigenous groups in our fight for environmental justice, against the climate crisis and Big Polluters,” said LCV Senior Director of Civic Engagement Hilda Nucete. “We’re committed to centering Indigenous communities and communities of color who have been historically excluded in our democracy, but have long been frontline leaders in the fight for community and environmental liberation, which is why we’re proud to partner with local partners to help ensure more voters on the Navajo Nation are able to make their voices heard at the ballot box.”

“We have a dream to lead, provide and advocate for our people on our own terms. We’re organizing to spark community compassion and engagement while educating and informing our Diné relatives about their voting rights,” said Liv Knoki, Executive Director of Wingbeat 88. “Organizing the Wingbeat 88 way is defined less by Westernized systematic approaches to change and more by what it means to feel and see positive change in our communities through genuine connectivity and honored sovereignty rights.”

“We have organized and registered voters on the Utah and Arizona sides of the Navajo Nation for years to help ensure every community, no matter their zip code, is able to exercise their fundamental right to vote,” said Stewardship Utah Executive Director TJ Ellerbeck. “This year, we’re excited to partner with Wingbeat 88 to register voters in Arizona, which marks the largest voter registration effort ever on the Navajo Nation.”

This partnership, which began in December of 2023,  builds on our non-partisan, multi-state voter registration program taking place across the country, so far registering over 280,000 eligible voters in historically disenfranchised communities across the country in 2024 through field efforts, with an additional 150K through mail and digital efforts. LCV has collected forms from voters in all 50 states, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.
