WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Tom Suozzi for Congress (NY-3), following his endorsement by New York LCV. Suozzi has been a longtime leader for protecting Long Island’s environment.

“Tom Suozzi has always been a committed, forward-thinking advocate for safeguarding the environment and public health on Long Island,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “As a mayor and a county executive, he truly led the way in investing in renewable energy to combat climate change, protecting clean water, and preserving open spaces. We are excited to have his vision and passion fighting for New Yorkers and everyone in this country in Congress.”

“I’m proud of my long and proven record of protecting the environment, preserving open space and cleaning up the Long Island Sound,” said Suozzi. “I look forward to working with other liked-minded environmentalists in Congress to continue the necessary work of combating climate change and protecting the environment to ensure generations to come will be able to enjoy the natural beauty of our country.”

Tom Suozzi was elected Mayor of Glen Cove in 1994, and he served through 2001. He went on to serve as Nassau County Executive from 2002 to 2009. Through his years in public service, Suozzi has compiled an impressive environmental record. He implemented a program to source 25 percent of the county’s energy from renewable sources, and he helped pass a $150 million bond program to preserve open space and protect Long Island Sound. He also initiated 12 brownfield clean-up projects, made it a priority to improve water quality by establishing a ground water protection program, and worked to promote smart growth and reduce suburban sprawl. For his efforts, Suozzi was awarded by NYLCV as the “environmentalist of the year” in 2008.

Suozzi is featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions for federal office.

About LCV Action Fund

The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund (LCVAF), the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental laws and policies, and defeat those who stand in the way of progress. Since the 1994 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 69 U.S. Senators and 306 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.  In the 2013-2014 election cycle, LCVAF endorsed over 70 candidates and raised and donated almost $6 million dollars via GiveGreen. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
