GIVEGREEN SURPASSES $5 MILLION FUNDRAISING GOAL FOR ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMPIONS

Oct 20, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, LCV Action Fund and the NRDC Action Fund PAC announced they surpassed $5 million raised or contributed for federal and state candidates through the GiveGreen program this election cycle. This represents the most money ever raised through GiveGreen, a project of the LCV Action Fund, during a single election cycle and is two and half times the amount raised in the 2012 cycle.

This includes record-breaking contributions to several candidates, including:

Mark Udall, (D-CO) over $370,000—the largest amount ever raised for a candidate on GiveGreen

Bruce Braley, (D-IA) over $280,000

Kay Hagan, (D-NC) over $275,000

Gary Peters, (D-MI) over $265,000

Jeanne Shaheen, (D-NH) over $220,000

Michelle Nunn, (D-GA), over $106,000

“Last month we pledged to meet extreme weather with a green storm of our own and we have continued to blow through our own expectations,” said Gene Karpinski, President of LCV Action Fund. “This kind of support for environmental champions demonstrates that the environmental movement has taken a giant leap forward.”

“Today marks a significant milestone for the increased political power of the environmental community,” said Frances Beinecke, President of NRDC Action Fund PAC. “Political donors from all across the country utilized GiveGreen to show their support for environmental champions because they know these candidates will take action to address climate change.”

In September, LCV Action Fund, working with NRDC Action Fund, as well as a host of other organizations and lawmakers, held a “GreenStorm”. This one-day online fundraising event brought the environmental community together to raise more than $400,000 in contributions for GiveGreen candidates and featured Gary Peters, Bruce Braley, Jeanne Shaheen, and Mark Udall.

Earlier this year, LCV Action Fund announced the expansion of the existing GiveGreen program and a goal of raising $5 million this election cycle with support from NRDC Action Fund PAC as part of a broader strategic alliance between LCV and the NRDC Action Fund called LeadingGreen.

During the 2010 election cycle, the GiveGreen program raised or contributed $1.3 million for environmental candidates. In the 2012 cycle, GiveGreen doubled that number with over $2 million raised or contributed to environmental champions by Election Day. This cycle GiveGreen had already surpassed the total 2012 figure before Memorial Day.

More information on individual candidates can be accessed online at www.givegreen.com, which is the only website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions and candidates. The GiveGreen total includes all contributions raised or contributed by LCV Action Fund in 2013-2014 for federal candidates, as well as contributions raised or contributed by state LCV partners (i.e. Virginia, Maine and South Carolina) through their GiveGreen nonfederal programs.
