Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsements of U.S. Representative Haley Stevens (MI-11) and candidates Carl Marlinga (MI-10) and Shri Thanedar (MI-13) for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan.

Communities in the Great Lakes State need leaders who will fight for a healthy climate, justice, and jobs,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “As elected officials, Haley Stevens, Carl Marlinga, and Shri Thanedar have all demonstrated their commitment to protecting our environment and communities from the devastating impacts of the climate crisis. We can count on them to continue to protect Michiganders’ health and fight for environmental justice for all people, not corporate polluters and special interests.”

“Saving the environment is a moral obligation that we owe to ourselves but more importantly to our children and our grandchildren,” said Carl Marlinga. “We have been late in answering the call but instead of worrying about what was not done in the past we have to commit ourselves with all of our energy and all of our resources to clean up our skies, take care of our lakes, rivers and streams and save our planet.”
“As a scientist, I’ve seen first hand the effects corporate polluters have on our communities and neighborhoods,” said Shri Thanedar. “It’s time to fight for clean water, air, and invest in clean renewable energy that boosts the economy, creates good, high paying jobs, and keeps Michiganders safe.”
Representative Haley Stevens was born and raised in Oakland County and has dedicated her career to saving and growing good-paying jobs in Michigan. During the Great Recession, she served as chief of staff on the Auto Task Force inside of the U.S. Treasury Department, the team responsible for returning the auto industry to financial stability and saving 211,000 Michigan jobs. Most recently, she led a national workforce development program and created the country’s first online training program for digital manufacturing. Earlier in her career, Representative Stevens played a key role in setting up two federal offices critical in creating new Michigan jobs: The Office of Recovery for Automotive Communities and Workers, and the White House Office for Manufacturing Policy. In Congress, she has focused on protecting Michigan’s clean air, water and lands, and investing in growing the clean energy economy. A member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Energy, Stevens has been a champion of the job-creating climate provisions in the Inflation Reduction Act. Active in the Congressional PFAS Task Force, Stevens has been a leader on clean manufacturing, plastic waste reduction and recycling research, and recently helped introduce bipartisan legislation directing the EPA to include PFAS chemicals on the list of hazardous air pollutants under the Clean Air Act.
Judge Carl Marlinga was born and raised in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. Throughout his career he has worked in private legal practice, served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Macomb County, an Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, and a Special Trial attorney with the U.S. Justice Department’s Organized Crime Strike Force. In 1985, he was elected to the first of five four-year terms as Prosecuting Attorney for Macomb County, and in 2012, Judge Marlinga was elected to his first six-year term as a judge with the Macomb County Probate Court. In February 2022, he stepped down to run to represent Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. Judge Marlinga has a strong record of fighting for Michigan’s environment. In 1994, he investigated contamination in Lake St. Clair, which resulted in the first-ever challenge made by a county government in Michigan to prevent sewage overflows and resulted in local governments investing in overflow prevention and spurred the Department of Environmental Quality to finally step-up enforcement and required other cities to begin modernizing treatment plants to eliminate raw sewage pollution. Marlinga also created the first-ever assistant prosecutor entirely devoted to environmental enforcement in the Macomb County Prosecutor’s office. As a member of Congress, he will continue to make protecting Michigan’s clean water and Great Lakes a top priority.
Michigan State Representative Shri Thanedar is an accomplished chemist and business owner, starting several research and pharmaceutical companies. In 2020, he was elected to represent the 3rd District in the Michigan House of Representatives. As a state representative, he has supported strong legislation to protect Michigan’s waterways, including the Great Lakes. This includes proposals to shut down the Enbridge Energy Line 5 oil pipeline, and protection of native wildlife from invasive species. Thanedar supports the Green New Deal and investing in clean energy for Michigan’s future. In Congress, he will champion reducing pollution in communities of color and funding research to study the impacts pollution has had on these communities.
