Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Brenda Lawrence for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Michigan’s 14th Congressional District.

“Representative Brenda Lawrence has been a strong advocate for preventing further environmental health crises by fighting for clean drinking water free from dangerous toxins and providing opportunities to educate environmental health professionals,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are proud to support her for re-election as she continues to fight for bold and equitable solutions to the climate crisis in Congress.”

“Representative Brenda Lawrence has been a leading voice in Congress to address the Flint water crisis and has continued to fight for stronger water protections to keep lead and PFAS out of our water,” said Michigan League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Lisa Wozniak. “We know we can count on her to continue fighting to ensure all Michigan communities have safe, affordable water to drink and clean air to breathe.

“In Michigan our environment is a quality of life issue, it’s the air we breathe and the water we drink and I will continue to fight for it every day in Congress,” said Representative Brenda Lawrence. “That’s why I am so honored to have the continued support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund for my re-election as we work together to fight for environmental and climate justice.”

Representative Brenda Lawrence was first elected to represent Michigan’s 14th Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representative in 2014. She serves as Ranking Member on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Subcommittee on the Interior and the Small Business Subcommittee on Agriculture, Energy and Trade. One of her first acts in Congress was to vote against immediate authorization of the dirty and dangerous Keystone XL Pipeline.  She has been a strong voice calling for answers on the Clinton River oil spill, and spoken forcefully in favor of the Clean Power Plan, the first-ever national limit on carbon pollution. She has been one of the leaders in Congress working to address the Flint water crisis and the issue of unsafe drinking water across the country. She led efforts in pushing for an emergency aid package for Flint and calling for hearings on the issue. Representative Lawrence introduced the Environmental Health Workforce Act of 2016, which would prioritize education and training for environmental health professionals and attempt to prevent future environmental health crises. Prior to Congress, Representative Lawrence spent 12 years as Mayor of Southfield, four years on the Southfield City Council and four years on the Southfield Board of Education.  As Mayor, Lawrence joined 100 of her fellow mayors in a letter to President Obama expressing concerns with the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline.  Representative Lawrence has earned an excellent 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
