LCV Action Fund Endorses Deborah Ross for U.S. Senate

Feb 25, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today proudly announced its endorsement of Deborah Ross for U.S. Senate from North Carolina. Ross has been a longtime champion for North Carolina’s environment, working to grow the clean energy economy and protecting public health.

“In the race to be the next U.S. Senator for North Carolina, Deborah Ross has an unmatched record of advocating for our environment and taking action to address the challenge of our generation—climate change,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld.  “Whether helping renewable energy companies get certified before the utilities commission or bringing more mass transit options to the Triangle region, Deborah Ross is the proven leader we need in the Senate.”

“As a member of the General Assembly, North Carolinians could always count on Deborah Ross to put our environment and our families first,” said North Carolina League of Conservation Voters (NCLCV) Director of Government Relations Dan Crawford. “With a perfect voting record seven of the ten years she was in the legislature, Ross consistently and fervently stood up against bad legislation and defended our communities from the environmental degradation pushed by the polluter lobby.”

“From the mountains to our coast, a healthy environment is one of our state’s biggest economic drivers,” said Ross. “North Carolina needs a U.S. Senator who will protect North Carolina’s wonderful natural resources, work to address the impacts of climate change, and make sure all people – and generations to come – have clean water to drink and clean air to breathe. I’m proud to have earned the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and as North Carolina’s next U.S. Senator, I will always put the good of our state and our people first.”

During her time in the state legislature, Ross was a strong environmental champion, earning a 94 percent lifetime score on NCLCV’s Legislative Scorecard.  She voted repeatedly to increase clean energy, address climate change, and protect North Carolina’s land, air and water.  In her final term, she opposed legislation to roll back years of energy conservation work and supported legislation preventing manufacturers from deceiving customers about the biodegradability of their products.  As an attorney in private practice in 2008, she worked with renewable energy companies to get certified by the Utilities Commission, helping to negotiate purchase agreements.  As General Counsel at Triangle Transit, she worked hard to bring light rail and commuter rail to the region.  In the U.S. Senate, she will continue this leadership by working to increase investments in clean energy, diverse transportation, and protect North Carolina’s coast from the threat of offshore drilling.

In contrast, Senator Richard Burr has earned a 7 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard including a 4 percent score for 2015. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
