Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Eric Sorensen for election to the U.S. House representing Illinois’s 17th District.

“Now more than ever, it is critical that Congress have strong climate communicators like Eric Sorensen who know how to help people understand the impact the climate crisis has on all communities,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are confident that Eric Sorensen will always stand up for people over corporate polluters and help lead the fight for climate, jobs, and justice.”

“Eric Sorensen has been a strong advocate for communities in Illinois for decades, and we are thrilled to see LCV Action Fund support his campaign to represent Illinois in Congress,” said Illinois Environmental Council General Fund Executive Director Jennifer Walling. “His depth of experience as a scientist and science communicator make him the best candidate to tackle the climate crisis while centering justice as we work to transition to a clean energy economy with good paying, sustainable jobs for people in Illinois and the rest of the country.”

“To me, being a meteorologist has always been about protecting our communities and keeping people safe. It’s clear that climate change will only continue to impact our communities,” said Eric Sorensen. “We need a climate communicator who will advocate for meaningful action with a foundation of science, and the people of Central and Northwest Illinois need a representative who’s going to fight to bring home the good-paying jobs of the green economy. I’m grateful to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund.”

Eric Sorensen has decades of climate communication experience working as a meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities. He started Project Tornado, an initiative to bring meteorologists into schools to help kids feel safer during severe weather and serves on the boards of local organizations that connect vulnerable LGBTQ+ individuals to health services. If elected, Sorensen will be the first open LGBTQ+ person elected to represent Illinois in Congress.
