Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Evan McMullin for election to the U.S. Senate as an independent representing Utah.

“Evan McMullin is the independent voice Utahns can count on in the U.S. Senate to fight for a strong democracy and for all communities to have clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment,”  said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Communities in Utah feel the impact of our changing climate every single day – bad air quality, drought, brutal wildfire seasons, and more 100+ degree days. Evan McMullin understands the challenges facing Utahns, and he will always put what is right for the Beehive State’s communities and environment ahead of politics.”

“I’m grateful to the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund for their endorsement and focus on the vital relationship between a strong democracy and a healthy environment,” said Evan McMullin.Protecting our air and water is a critical responsibility that affects our health, prosperity and quality of life. We can only do so successfully if we work together to strengthen our democracy while simultaneously taking the needed steps to address climate issues. Starting on day one, I will prioritize both. I appreciate LCV Action Fund’s confidence in my sincere commitment.”

A native of Provo, after graduating from Brigham Young University, Evan McMullin spent a year as a volunteer refugee settlement officer with the UN High Commission for Refugees in Israel and Jordan and then began former training with the CIA to become an operations officer. After the September 11 terrorist attacks, he spent a decade working on counterterrorism and intelligence operations with the National Clandestine Service in the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. Completing missions that included information-gathering against the Taliban and al-Qaeda and working undercover in Iraq, McMullin returned to the U.S. and graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He has served as a senior adviser on national security issues for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and as the chief policy director for the House Republican Conference. He resigned from that position to run for president in 2016 as an independent. He received 734,737 votes nationwide, with his best performance in Utah, where he received 21.5% of the vote. After Donald Trump’s election he founded Stand Up Republic, a nonpartisan watchdog organization. McMullin is running for Senate in Utah as an independent, building a cross-partisan coalition of Democrats, Republicans and independents who are committed to strengthening our democracy and protecting our air and water.
