LCV Action Fund Endorses Gabe Vasquez for Congress

Mar 9, 2022

Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Gabe Vasquez for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from New Mexico’s 2nd Congressional District.

“Gabe Vasquez is a true climate justice champion whose passion for conservation and racial equity permeates every aspect of his work and we are thrilled to support his campaign for Congress,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “From his career organizing to solve problems for New Mexico business, communities and families to serving on the Las Cruces City Council – we know he will listen to and prioritize the needs of communities and fight for clean energy, justice, jobs, and a healthy, equitable future for all.”

“Gabe has been a lifelong advocate for protecting our lands and people in New Mexico,” said Conservation Voters New Mexico’s executive director Demis Foster. “This is clear from his advocacy for the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument; leadership on the state’s 30×30 executive order to protect 30% of New Mexico’s land, water, and wildlife; the founding of the Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project; and his role in creation of the first-of-its-kind Outdoor Equity Fund. Gabe has a deep concern with providing equitable access to the outdoors for all New Mexicans so they can experience his own love of hunting, angling, and hiking.”

“New Mexico’s natural resources and public lands are second to none. I’ve worked hard to protect our public lands and waters throughout my career, and I’ll continue to support conservation policies and advocate for the wise use of our natural resources in Congress,” said Gabe Vasquez. “In New Mexico’s 2nd District, our identities, livelihoods, culture, and history are tied to our lands. That’s why I’m proud to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and work for you in Congress to ensure we can pass on our traditions to the next generation. Whether you hunt, fish, hike, camp, or bike – we must protect the lands and waters that we love.”

Gabe Vasquez has dedicated his career to protecting the environment. He began working as a field representative for conservation champion Senator Heinrich, where he was instrumental in the designation of the Organ Mountains Desert Peaks National Monument, protecting it from harmful development and safeguarding it for future generations. In 2016 he served as the Community Outreach Director for the New Mexico Wildlife Federation. Vasquez was elected to the Las Cruces City Council in 2017 where he delivered millions of dollars in investment to create and improve parks, updated his council district’s infrastructure, promoted policies that created thousands of jobs, and helped craft a comprehensive development plan that focused on lifting families out of poverty. In 2017, he founded Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project which aims to ensure that marginalized communities have access to the outdoors.
