Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today the endorsement of Heather Mizeur for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Maryland’s 1st Congressional District.

“Heather Mizeur has a long record leading the fights for climate action and protecting our democracy in Maryland and we are thrilled to support her campaign for Congress so she can continue this work for the Eastern Shore communities,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “As a farmer herself, we know Mizeur will be a defining voice to help bridge the farming, fishing, and environmental communities and champion the investments we desperately need in climate, clean energy, justice, and jobs.”

“Heather’s commitment to environmental policy is unquestionable,” said Kim Coble, Executive Director, Maryland LCV. “During her time as a Delegate in the Maryland General Assembly she was one of the early leaders on the efforts to ban fracking and she held an impressive 98% lifetime voting record during her eight years in office.”

“Maryland’s First District is synonymous with the Chesapeake Bay, and therefore uniquely vulnerable to the climate crisis. Yet over more than 10 years of voting, our representative has only been on the side of the environment 3 percent of the time. He is not simply unfriendly to the environment, he is hostile to it — at a time when we deserve a champion for our district’s bountiful natural resources,” said Heather Mizeur, Democratic candidate for Congress in Maryland’s First District. “By contrast, I earned a lifetime score of 98 percent from Maryland LCV for my work in the state legislature. Now, I am honored to have the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund’s support in this critical election, where we are bringing together conservationists and environmentalists as well as farmers to find consensus solutions to protect our planet and support rural agricultural communities.”

Heather Mizeur served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates from 2007 to 2015 where she  earned a 98 percent lifetime score on Maryland LCV’s Scorecard. The Baltimore Sun once called Mizeur “one of the leading environmental advocates in the General Assembly.” In the state legislature, she fought for more funding for clean energy, clean water and Chesapeake Bay restoration. Mizeur also fought for more open and transparent government in Maryland through the Maryland Open Government Act and the creation of the Joint Committee on Transparency and Open Government. She was an early voice warning of the dangers of fracking, first writing about them in a 2010 Baltimore Sun op-ed and in 2011 introducing the Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Act to require strict safety studies on fracking in Maryland. Mizeur went on to serve on the Marcellus Shale Safe Drilling Initiative, which helped the state permanently ban fracking in 2018. As a DNC member, she authored a resolution urging rejection of the Keystone XL pipeline and spoke at a rally outside the White House against the dirty and dangerous pipeline. In contrast, Representative Andy Harris has an abysmal 3 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard and sought to legitimize efforts to decertify the results of the 2020 presidential election, voted against creating a commission on the January 6 insurrection and against awarding Congressional Gold Medals to the officers who defended the Capitol on January 6.

About LCV Action Fund

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, the connected federal political action committee (PAC) of the League of Conservation Voters, works to elect leaders who stand up for a clean, healthy environment and to defeat anti-environment candidates who oppose climate action. Since the 1990 election cycle, LCVAF has helped elect and re-elect 95 U.S. Senators and 462 members of the U.S. House of Representatives. Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
