Washington, DC — The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced its endorsement of Karen Carter Peterson for election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional District.

“As a state senator, Karen Carter Peterson has been a strong advocate for climate action, clean energy, and drinking water protections for all Louisiana communities. She has been a leading voice for environmental and climate justice in a state where communities of color have long suffered from the devastating impacts of environmental racism, from Cancer Alley and beyond,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are thrilled to support her campaign in this special election because we know she will continue her fight to advance racially, economically and socially just environmental and climate policies when she gets to Congress.”

“Nowhere in the U.S. has felt the devastating impacts of climate change and toxic pollution more than the 2nd Congressional District. Deadly hurricane seasons and flooding are destroying our homes and displacing communities, and while toxic pollution poisons our water and air, the suffering in our communities will only get worse. We have to take immediate action on the climate crisis to protect our future,” Sen. Karen Carter Peterson said. “In Congress, I’ll work to pass a Green New Deal that creates thousands of high-paying, green jobs and brings clean air, clean water, and clean energy to all Louisianans. Together, we’ll hold toxic polluters accountable and build a thriving, equitable, and globally competitive clean energy economy that puts workers and communities first. I’m proud to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and look forward to working with LCV to tackle the climate crisis head-on.”

Karen Carter Peterson is a native New Orleanian with a large family and deep roots in Louisiana. As a leader in the state legislature for 21 years, Karen established herself as a bold, progressive voice for working people. While serving in Baton Rouge, Karen fought to get communities the help they needed after Hurricane Katrina, led the charge to expand Medicaid in Louisiana while serving on President Obama’s Affordable Care Act Task Force, and stood up for reproductive freedom whenever those rights were threatened. Karen previously served as DNC Vice Chair for Civic Engagement and Voter Participation and the first woman elected Chair of the Louisiana Democratic Party.

Over the last several years, our efforts have also helped elevate climate change and clean energy as critical issues in key elections.
