Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, announced today its endorsement of House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer for re-election to the U.S. House from Maryland’s 5th Congressional District.

“Leader Steny Hoyer’s leadership in the U.S. House has been critical in the effort to defend our environment from the relentless attacks by the Trump administration and to advance climate action by the new House majority,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We are proud to endorse him for re-election because we know that he will never stop fighting for Marylanders’ clean air, water, and a safe climate. Now, more than ever, we need Leader Hoyer and other members of Congress to fight for racial justice and equity, including climate justice and environmental justice for communities of color.”

“Marylanders across our state appreciate Steny Hoyer’s longtime leadership to protect the Chesapeake Bay and our state’s other natural treasures,” said Maryland LCV Executive Director Kim Coble. “We are also proud of his leadership in the House of Representatives to put forward an agenda that reflects our shared environmental values and the need to act on the climate crisis.”

“I am honored to be endorsed by the LCV Action Fund,” said Congressman Hoyer. “The climate crisis is a real and extremely serious threat facing communities throughout Maryland and around the world. Throughout my career in Congress, I’ve supported strong legislation to protect our environment, reduce carbon pollution, and improve public health. I am grateful for the important work LCV is doing to address the climate crisis, and I look forward to continuing to work together to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries, and all our natural resources.”

As House Majority Leader, Steny Hoyer has helped lead many of the U.S. House’s climate and environmental accomplishments in the 116th Congress that put our health and communities first. These include the passage of the Climate Action Now Act (H.R. 9), which Leader Hoyer cosponsored, as well as legislation to fund critical environmental and public health programs, safeguard our drinking water, and protect our coasts and public lands from devastating fossil fuel extraction. He is also an outspoken advocate for the Chesapeake Bay, recently joining a letter to watershed state governors urging them to maintain protections for the Bay in the face of EPA rollbacks. Leader Hoyer earned an impressive 97% score on LCV’s 2019 National Environmental Scorecard.
