Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Senator Sheldon Whitehouse for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Rhode Island.

“Nobody is more focused on the urgent need to combat the climate crisis than Senator Whitehouse, and we could not be more enthusiastic about endorsing him as he runs for reelection,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “From his weekly ‘Time to Wake Up’ on climate speeches on the Senate floor to his invaluable role on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to fighting back against the Trump administration and the corporate special interests who are unjustly influencing our democracy, we need Senator Whitehouse in the Senate now more than ever.”

“It’s an honor to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund—a group that has done so much to further policies that protect our environment,” said Senator Whitehouse.  “With President Trump in the White House and Republicans in Congress carrying out the fossil fuel industry’s agenda, it has never been more important to elect candidates who are ready to take on the major climate challenges bearing down on our economy and our way of life.”

As co-chair and co-founder of the Bicameral Task Force on Climate Change and the bipartisan Senate Oceans Caucus, as well as helping to lead the Senate Climate Action Task Force, Senator Whitehouse has made taking action on climate change one of his top priorities. In his former position as Chair of the Environment and Public Works Subcommittee on Oversight, he convened many hearings on the necessity of using sound science in regulatory decisions to better protect our families and the environment. In addition, Whitehouse has been a vocal advocate for increasing energy efficiency in public housing, developing more renewable energy sources, protecting our coastlines and marine habitats, including Narragansett Bay, and investigating the BP Deepwater Horizon disaster, the worst environmental catastrophe in our nation’s history. Senator Whitehouse has earned a truly impressive lifetime score of 98% on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
