Washington D.C.- In today’s debate on WDIV, Representative Mike Bishop continued his election-year attempts to mislead voters about his true anti-environmental voting record while Elissa Slotkin once again proved she will be a strong advocate for clean air, clean water and Michigan’s environment.

When asked about human-caused climate change, Slotkin demonstrated her first-hand knowledge of the national security risks of climate change while Representative Bishop denied the scientific consensus that human activity is driving this crisis.

Bishop tried to pivot and claim he has fought to protect the Great Lakes when he has failed to consistently stand up for clean water protections, oppose drilling in the Great Lakes, and to hold polluters accountable.

“When Representative Mike Bishop was Senate Majority Leader, he had the opportunity to do the right thing and ban drilling in the Great Lakes after the Enbridge Line 6b spill. Instead he let down Michigan families by refusing to take up a proposed constitutional amendment,” said Michigan League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Lisa Wozniak. “His dismal record on protecting our state’s treasured environment earned him a 20% lifetime score on our Legislative Scorecard, and a 0 percent when he was State Senate Majority Leader. No election-year conversion is going to change the fact the Michiganders cannot count on Mike Bishop.”

“The science of climate change is settled, and Representative Mike Bishop’s continued denial and embrace of policies that worsen this crisis underscore just how unfit he is to serve in Congress,” said League of Conservation Voters Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “This debate has made it clearer than ever that Elissa Slotkin is the champion who Michigan’s families and environment can count on to protect them, while Representative Bishop only cares about protecting the profits of his polluter donors.”

The League of Conservation Voters Action Fund endorsed Elissa Slotkin for Congress in Michigan’s 8th District in January because of her strong commitment to protecting our environment and addressing climate change. In contrast, Representative Bishop has earned an appalling 5% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. In January, this opinion-editorial by Lisa Wozniak appeared in the Lansing Journal on Representative Bishop’s real environmental record.
