Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) congratulates Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Representatives Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08), Jerry Nadler (NY-12), Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), Jamaal Bowman (NY-16), Pat Ryan (NY-18) and Paul Tonko (NY-20), and Representative-elect Dan Goldman (NY-10) on their wins in New York. LCV also joins our state affiliate New York LCV in congratulating New York Governor Kathy Hochul on her successful campaign. Read NYLCV’s update on state wins here.

“In addition to sending Leader Schumer, numerous climate champions who helped deliver the Inflation Reduction Act, and at least one new climate leader to Congress, New York voters made history by passing the Environmental Bond Act that will invest billions of dollars to protect clean drinking water, modernize infrastructure, and improve quality of life across New York State,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “We look forward to working with all of New York’s climate champions to continue to advance environmental justice and build a clean energy future.”

Environmental donors contributed nearly $827,000 to New York candidates via GiveGreen. GiveGreen — a partnership between LCV Victory Fund and NRDC Action Votes that helps grassroots donors directly contribute to pro-environment candidates — raised a midterm record $26.9 million for the 2022 cycle.

Additionally, LCV’s state affiliate in New York, New York LCV, helped raise over $1 million for the Vote Yes campaign to successfully pass Prop 1, the Environmental Bond Act. New York’s historic Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Bond Act will invest billions of dollars to protect clean drinking water, modernize infrastructure, and improve quality of life across New York State. The measure will help communities throughout New York make critical upgrades to water and sewer lines, replace lead pipes, and maintain water treatment plants to ensure that our drinking water is safe and clean. The Bond Act will support 100,000 local, family-sustaining jobs across multiple sectors, from construction, to healthcare, to retail, and more.

These are just some of the victories up and down the ballot in New York, demonstrating that leaning into environmental issues is both good policy and good politics.
