Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) congratulates Speaker Nancy Pelosi (CA-11), Senator Alex Padilla, Representatives Jared Huffman (CA-02), Ami Bera (CA-06), Doris Matsui (CA-07), Josh Harder (CA-09), Ro Khanna (CA-17), Jimmy Panetta (CA-19), Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Raul Ruiz (CA-25), Julia Brownley (CA-26), Grace Napolitano (CA-31), Pete Aguilar (CA-33), Nanette Barragán (CA-44), Katie Porter (CA-47), and Mike Levin (CA-49) and House candidates Sydney Kamlager (CA-37)  and Robert Garcia (CA-42) on their wins in California.

“California’s strong show of support for these environmental champions shows that California voters want leaders that will work hard for a healthy environment and a safe democracy,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “Congratulations on your victories — we’re committed to fighting alongside each of you for a just and equitable transition to a clean energy future.”

LCV Victory Fund invested over $730,000 to defeat Brian Maryott and re-elect Rep. Mike Levin in CA-49, and $100,000 to defeat Scott Baugh and re-elect Rep. Katie Porter in CA-47. The spending included digital ads and mail highlighting Levin and Porter’s support for lowering costs, creating clean energy jobs, and combating the climate crisis through the Inflation Reduction Act as part of the Climate Voters Mobilization program with Climate Power Action. Additionally, LCV Victory Fund and EDF Action Votes ran a TV ad in CA-49 highlighting Levin’s support for the solar industry.

On the campaign trail, Sen. Alex Padilla emphasized the Inflation Reduction Act’s $4 billion investment in drought resiliency. Rep. Katie Porter (CA-47) campaigned on going after big oil corporations that are price gouging families and using the investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to accelerate our transition to clean energy. Rep. Mike Levin (CA-49) centered his role in helping to pass the historic investments in the Inflation Reduction Act to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and transition to a clean energy future that will lower energy costs and grow our economy.

LCV’s GreenRoots member mobilization program turned out LCV members to volunteer for the Porter and Levin campaigns as part of a nationwide field program to help elect environmental champions that engaged 8,250 total LCV members.

Environmental donors contributed over $1.2 million to California candidates via GiveGreen. GiveGreen — a partnership between LCV Victory Fund and NRDC Action Votes that helps grassroots donors directly contribute to pro-environment candidates — raised a midterm record $26.9 million for the 2022 cycle.

These are just some of the climate champions who won up and down the ballot in California, demonstrating that leaning into environmental issues is both good policy and good politics.
