Paul LePage First Incumbent Governor Ever Named to LCV’s Dirty Dozen Program

Sep 16, 2014

WASHINGTON – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced Governor Paul LePage as the first incumbent governor ever named to LCV’s trademark Dirty Dozen program.

“Governor LePage’s unique addition to our Dirty Dozen reflects the urgency to stop his extensive anti-environment agenda. Gov. LePage questioned the scientific finding that climate change is due to human activities, and even claimed that it is good for Maine.  He ignores that a warming Atlantic Ocean could devastate Maine’s lobster and fishing industry, eliminating thousands of jobs,” said Daniel J. Weiss, Senior Vice President for Campaigns at LCV.

“Governor LePage has taken a wrecking ball to our state. He has vetoed bipartisan bills that would have kept pollution out of our lakes, protected our children from harmful chemicals, and invested in our clean energy economy. We can’t allow Paul LePage to drag Maine in the wrong direction for another four years,” said Maureen Drouin, Executive Director of Maine Conservation Voters Action Fund.

LePage questioned the extent to which climate change is caused by human activities and even claimed that climate change could be a good thing for Maine.  In reality, rising Atlantic Ocean temperatures could devastate Maine’s fishing industry. He proposed weakening many of Maine’s bedrock environmental laws, including those protecting water resources. LePage also opposes funding for research and development of clean energy projects and worked to derail an offshore wind project in Maine.

LePage’s opponent, Rep. Mike Michaud, has earned a 92% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
