Biss

Daniel Biss is a mathematician who has served as a state representative, state senator, and mayor, always fighting for bold solutions to climate change that hold polluters accountable.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at Harvard University and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Biss moved to Illinois to join the University of Chicago’s mathematics faculty. He got involved in progressive activism for a wide variety of causes, including expanded social services, access to reproductive healthcare, and protections for LBGTQ+ youth. Biss was then elected to serve in both the Illinois House of Representatives and the Illinois State Senate before serving as mayor of Evanston. As an elected official, Biss has consistently recognized the importance of climate-smart investments. As mayor, he developed the innovative Healthy Buildings Ordinance, which helps reduce emissions and increase efficiency in large buildings, a policy that has since gained national acclaim.

As a representative, Biss will continue to be a climate-forward leader and a vocal proponent of policies that rapidly advances a clean energy economy, invests in frontline communities, and ensures that the biggest polluters pay their fair share. As a state senator, Biss earned a 100% score on the Illinois Environmental Council’s 2018 Environmental Scorecard.

Biss joins the U.S. House to fill the seat of retiring Representative Jan Schakowsky, who earned a 97% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
