Adrian Boafo is a climate and environmental justice champion who has spent his career in Maryland public service fighting for clean water, affordable energy, and climate resilience measures.

Boafo grew up in Prince George County and went to the University of Baltimore, where he was elected as the first Black president of the school’s Student Government Association. He worked for former Congressman Steny Hoyer in Maryland’s Fifth District before being elected to the Bowie City Council and later the Maryland House of Delegates. In each of these roles, Boafo centered healthy communities and clean energy. During his time on the Bowie City Council, where he served as mayor pro tem, Boafo championed a clean water program, securing millions in funding to replace deteriorating pipes. As a Maryland delegate, Boafo co-sponsored and supported a wide variety of climate legislation, including efforts to reduce carbon emissions in new building construction, legislation to make polluters pay for climate damages, and a moratorium on utility rate hikes in the face of rising energy bills.

As a representative, Boafo will continue to be a champion for the environment and innovative investments that support a green economy while holding polluters accountable. Boafo earned a 100% score on the Maryland League of Conservation Voters 2024 Environmental Scorecard.

Boafo joins the U.S. House to fill the seat of retiring Representative Steny Hoyer, who earned a 84% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.

“My vision for Maryland is clear: fully fund Chesapeake Bay restoration, invest in flood mitigation and shoreline protection, expand solar and offshore wind to create good-paying union jobs, and advance environmental justice by reducing pollution in the communities that have been overburdened for too long.” – LCVAF Questionnaire
