Ben McAdams is a seventh-generation Utahn who has dedicated his life to public service and delivering for Utah communities.
After earning his law degree from Columbia Law School, McAdams returned to Utah to begin his legal career. He soon entered politics, serving as an advisor to Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker before winning a seat in the Utah Senate. McAdams served in the state Senate for four years, where he developed landmark LGBTQ+ non-discrimination legislation, before winning election to be Salt Lake City mayor. As mayor, he fought to support programs for the homeless, increased funding for parks and recreation facilities, and opposed the construction of a corporate data center. In 2018, McAdams was elected to the U.S. House, and continued to champion environmental and social justice issues, including accelerating solar energy research, reducing smog pollution, modernizing the electrical grid, and investing in transportation infrastructure.
As a representative, McAdams will once again fight to put Utah at the forefront of the green economy while protecting the state’s critical natural resources and public lands from drought, wildfire, and exploitation. During his previous term in Congress, McAdams earned a 82% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
McAdams rejoins the U.S. House after winning election in Utah’s newly-redrawn open First Congressional District, previously served by Representative Blake Moore, who earned a 7% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
“Climate change is an existential threat that demands our immediate attention. I will work in Congress to curb greenhouse gas emissions and address the many other environmental crises facing our state so that our kids can breathe clean air, enjoy nature, and inherit a prosperous future.” –LCVAF Questionnaire
