Portrait of Representative Eric Sorensen.

Eric Sorensen is a meteorologist who understands and works to convey the devastating impact the climate crisis will continue to have on all communities.

Sorensen has decades of climate communication experience working as a meteorologist in Rockford and the Quad Cities. He started Project Tornado, an initiative to bring meteorologists into schools to help kids feel safer during severe weather and serves on the boards of local organizations that connect vulnerable LGBTQ+ individuals to health services.

As a representative, Sorensen will lead our country’s transition to clean energy. He will increase investments in wind, solar, and geothermal infrastructure while creating good-paying, union jobs. Sorensen is the first openly LGBTQ+ person elected to represent Illinois in Congress.

Sorensen joins the U.S. House to fill the seat of retiring Representative Cheri Bustos who earned a 91% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.

In his own words:

“To me, being a meteorologist has always been about protecting our communities and keeping people safe. It’s clear that climate change will only continue to impact our communities. We need a climate communicator who will advocate for meaningful action with a foundation of science, and the people of Central and Northwest Illinois need a representative who’s going to fight to bring home the good-paying jobs of the green economy.”
