LaMonica McIver has dedicated her life to serving and protecting her community by enhancing public safety, improving housing conditions, and promoting economic development.
McIver was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey, and became politically active at the young age of 13, mobilizing her peers and underscoring the power of civic participation. McIver later earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature from Bloomfield College and a master’s in educational leadership and policy from Seton Hall University before working in New Jersey public schools in various human resources-related roles. In 2012, she founded Newark G.A.L.S., Inc., an organization empowering women leaders of tomorrow. In 2018, she became the youngest woman ever elected to the Newark Municipal Council. On the council, McIver led on clean water and climate initiatives, including helping replace 18,000 lead lines in the city’s water system. In addition, McIver led efforts to increase affordable housing and enhance educational opportunities.
As a representative, McIver will continue fighting for environmental justice, protecting our water supply, and promoting sustainability.
McIver was elected to the U.S. House in a special election in September 2024 to fill the seat of late Representative Donald M. Payne Jr., who earned a 93% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
