Marni von Wilpert is an attorney and San Diego city counselor who has used her platform to highlight the extreme threats that climate change and corporate polluters pose to all communities in the United States and California.
After receiving her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley, von Wilpert served as a Peace Corps volunteer, supporting communities during the AIDS crisis in Botswana, before going on to earn her law degree from Fordham. She later worked alongside the Mississippi Center for Justice to create a legal clinic that fought racial discrimination in the Deep South, as an attorney for the National Labor Relations Board, and as counsel at the Economic Policy Institute. In 2018, von Wilpert was selected to serve as San Diego’s deputy city attorney, where she made substantive efforts to hold polluters accountable for ozone and particulate pollution harming local communities. In 2020, she was elected to the San Diego City Council, where she has spent the last five years promoting clean energy, sustainable transportation, and climate equity programs.
As a representative, Wilpert will continue to hold polluters accountable, fight plans to drill off the California coast, and invest in clean energy solutions that lower costs and create good-paying jobs.
Wilpert joins the U.S. House to fill the open seat most recently held by the retiring Representative Darrell Issa, who earned a 4% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
“In San Diego, we have experienced increased flooding and wildfires that have destroyed my constituents’ homes and caused millions of dollars of damage to our community. The threat of climate change – and our inaction – is not theoretical, It is real and I am passionate about taking real action to stop it.” – LCVAF Questionnaire
