Melanie Stansbury represents New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District where she is working hard to protect New Mexico’s precious natural resources and communities.

Stansbury grew up in a working class family in Albuquerque, New Mexico and began her career as a science educator and researcher with the Museum of Natural History, advising on New Mexico’s land and water needs. She continued this work at the Office of Management and Budget and the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. In 2018, Stansbury was the first woman and first Democrat elected to serve as state representative in House District 28, where she passed legislation to foster resilience in food and water systems and modernize New Mexico’s electrical grid and advance a more data-driven water management approach.

As a representative, Stansbury will continue to her work to advance equitable climate policy and good-paying union jobs while improving water security in New Mexico and Western states and ensuring tribal voices are included in efforts to fight the climate crisis.

Stansbury will continue serving in the U.S. House after winning the special election in 2021 to fill the seat of former Representative Deb Haaland, who was confirmed as secretary of the Interior and earned a 98% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. Stansbury earned a 100% score in 2021 on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
