Sean McCann is a lifelong Michigander and experienced civic leader who has a prolific record of defending and supporting the environment across his career.
After graduating from Western Michigan University, McCann quickly pursued public service, and joined the Kalamazoo City Commission, where, for ten years, he led his community and specialized in disaster relief efforts. He was elected to the Michigan House in 2010, where he served for four years, before going on to serve in the Michigan Senate for another eight years. In both chambers, McCann championed environmental protections and civil rights. He was instrumental in repealing Michigan’s “No Stricter Than Federal” legislation and paved the path for his state to pursue more protective climate and environmental standards. McCann also chaired the Energy and Environment Committee in the Michigan Senate, and used his platform to transition the state away from dirty energy and investigate coal power plants that were illegally kept open despite their high pollution and costs.
As a representative, McCann will continue to hold polluters accountable while investing in clean energy production and sensible environmental protections. McCann earned a 95% lifetime score from Michigan League of Conservation Voters as a state senator.
McCann joins the U.S. House after defeating former Representative Bill Huizenga who earned a 6% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.
“Here in Michigan we know the importance of protecting our water, air, and land for our kids and the generations to come. I’ve always stood up to corporate polluters and taken on anyone who puts profits before people.” – @SeanAMcCann on X
