For over half a century, the League of Conservation Voters, Inc. (“LCV”), has led the charge for clean air, clean water, public lands, healthy communities and a sustainable planet for all. LCV has built political power and infrastructure at the intersection of climate policy and electoral strategy – advancing environmental protections, electing pro environmental lawmakers and aligning action across an integral multi-state network.
We envision a world in which tackling the climate crisis, confronting environmental injustice and strengthening our democracy leads to cleaner and healthier communities, good, well-paying jobs and a just, equitable and sustainable future for all.
LCV is hiring a Chief of Staff to the President to serve as a trusted, strategic partner to the President, Executive Team and Board of Directors. The Chief will help ensure the organization operates with clarity and alignment, support executive decision making, and strengthen cross-departmental coordination.
The Chief of Staff will orchestrate the conversations, systems and processes that leverage the time and talent of the President in service of the strategic plan. The Chief will anticipate needs and understand the President’s perspective to best support, prepare and represent him and ensure his portfolio is prioritized and organized.
Under the leadership of the President, the Chief of Staff will play a key role in spearheading and coalescing the Executive Team. The Chief will help create a culture that is collaborative, inclusive, aligned, driving toward our strategic goals and “holding the whole” of the organization.
The Chief will enable a strong partnership between the board, President, and Executive Team, ensuring alignment to organizational priorities. In addition, the Chief will lead the strategic planning process every four years, collaborating with the President, Board and senior leaders across the organization.
This is a senior-level role for someone with exceptional judgment, emotional intelligence and the ability to bring order to complexity. The ideal candidate is someone who earns trust quickly, communicates with precision and care and finds genuine satisfaction in making a leader and an organization more effective.
“This position is classified as “Regular Hybrid Work,” and is required to work in the Washington, DC office three days a week, ideally based around the President’s schedule.
Strategic Judgment. You know how to assess a situation quickly, weigh competing considerations and offer sound guidance. You’re comfortable operating in gray areas; you create clarity rather than waiting for it and you have a strong bias towards action. You know when to decide, when to escalate and when to slow down and ask additional questions.
Leadership & Relationship Building. You are comfortable managing up, down and across through influence rather than authority. You know how to build genuine relationships at every level of an organization — and people trust you to represent them and their work fairly. You read people and rooms well. You know when to push, when to listen and how to balance urgency with sustainability.
Excellence in Implementation. You’re the person who notices what’s missing, follows up without being asked and brings the same rigor to a small task as a big one. You have a proven ability to wrangle complexity, align stakeholders and deliver results even when priorities are shifting, all while staying anchored to the President’s priorities.
Communication & Relationship Management. You are a clear, direct communicator who can represent the President with credibility and care. You can represent someone else’s voice and priorities faithfully and well. You understand that trust is foundational to this role — and you treat it accordingly.
Emotional Intelligence & Adaptability. You bring self-awareness, humility and empathy to your work. You bring energy and steadiness in equal measure, and you don’t rattle easily when priorities shift, or things get hard. You understand how to read a room, manage complex interpersonal and power dynamics, build trust while holding others accountable and aren’t afraid to disagree.
Racial Justice & Equity Competencies. You have a demonstrated awareness of how one’s life experiences influence one’s personal attitudes, biases and assumptions. You bring a demonstrated commitment to continual learning and the ability to successfully deliver culturally responsive services. You are committed to equity and inclusion as organizational practice and culture. You understand how environmental issues intersect with racial, economic and social inequities in the U.S. and have a passion for working to dismantle systemic racism.
Physical Demands. You are comfortable operating in a professional office environment and routinely using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and audiovisual systems. This position is largely sedentary, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
Conditions. You have the ability and willingness to travel 10-15% of the time. This position is based in Washington, D.C.
