Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect pro-environment candidates, and California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) announced today their endorsements of Senator Alex Padilla for re-election to the U.S. Senate from California.

“Senator Alex Padilla has a long history of fighting for environmental justice and access to the ballot and in the Senate he has hit the ground running to address these critical issues, including calling on the Department of Justice to hold polluters accountable and introducing comprehensive legislation to expand and protect California’s wilderness,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We need bold leadership in the Senate and are proud to work with Senator Padilla to advance transformational progress towards addressing environmental justice, building clean energy infrastructure, and creating good paying jobs.”

“In a short amount of time, Senator Alex Padilla has already proven himself to be the bold, climate champion that California needs to meet this moment,” said CLCV Political and Organizing Director Mike Young. “From his time in the Los Angeles City Council, then the State Legislature, and then as California’s Secretary of State, Senator Padilla has always been committed to climate action and protecting our democracy, and we couldn’t be more excited to have his continued leadership now in Congress. With only nine years left to avert the catastrophic impacts of the climate crisis, Senator Padilla’s leadership in the Senate will move the needle towards building resilient communities, protecting public lands and resources, and ensuring a climate-just future for all Californians, and we are proud to endorse him.“

“Climate change is the defining issue of our time, and I’m committed to using my platform in the Senate to tackle this looming crisis head-on,” said Senator Padilla. “In California, we are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change, including prolonged drought, wildfires, and extreme heat. We must act quickly and decisively to preserve our planet for our children and grandchildren. I’m proud to have the support of the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and California League of Conservation Voters as we continue the fight to protect our beautiful lands and all who call them home.”

Alex Padilla is the son of Mexican immigrants and was raised in California’s San Fernando Valley.  He got his bachelor’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was the youngest Latino ever elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1999. In 2006, he was elected to the California State Senate. In 2014, Padilla was elected to serve as the California Secretary of State and in 2020 was appointed to the U.S. Senate by Governor Gavin Newsom, becoming the first Latino to represent the Golden State in the Senate.  During his time serving on the LA City Council, Padilla was a leader in the creation of the first Environmental Justice Zone in Los Angeles’ Sun Valley neighborhood.  As a California state senator, Padilla served on the Committee on Energy, Utilities, and Communications and authored and passed several pro-environment bills, including landmark climate legislation. As California Secretary of State, Padilla worked to uphold our democracy by combating voter suppression and increasing access to the ballot box.  In the U.S. Senate, Padilla serves on the Environment and Public Works Committee. Recently, he sent a letter to Attorney General Garland demanding that the Department of Justice hold polluters accountable and protect frontline communities, has been outspoken for transportation equity and resiliency, including restoring California’s ability to set vehicle emission standards and calling for a nationwide standard, serving as the lead Senate co-sponsor for the Clean Commute for Kids Act, cosponsoring the Green New Deal resolution and the BUILD GREEN for Infrastructure and Jobs Act.
