LCV Action Fund Endorses Congressman Derek Kilmer for Re-Election

Sep 26, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Derek Kilmer for re-election to Congress (WA-6). Congressman Kilmer is a strong environmental ally who is committed to combating climate change, growing our clean energy economy and protecting our oceans.

“Congressman Derek Kilmer is an environmental champion who is committed to finding bipartisan solutions that protect the future of our planet and tackle the challenge of our generation—climate change,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “He works hard to create jobs and expand clean energy industries like wind and solar to reduce our dependence on dirty fossil fuels.”

“Congressman Derek Kilmer is a strong advocate for Washington as he fights tirelessly to safeguard our air and water, and works hard to protect the Olympic National Forest,” said Shannon Murphy, President of Washington Conservation Voters. “He recognizes the importance of Washington’s waterways to our economy and way of life, which is why he is committed to restoring the Puget Sound and combating ocean acidification.”

“Growing up on the Olympic Peninsula, I learned the value of clean air and clean water and the importance of the notion that we can both grow our economy and protect our planet,” said Kilmer. “At home it’s a lesson that I’m teaching my two little girls. And in Congress it’s why I helped create the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus, why I’m fighting to protect our most vulnerable and iconic forests and rivers, and why I’m working to protect our communities and our economy from the growing threat posed by ocean acidification and climate change. I want to thank the LCV and the LCVAF, not only for their support but for the work they do to make a better future for all of us.”

A member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), Congressman Kilmer advocates for commonsense solutions that protect our environment and tackle climate disruption while expanding America’s clean energy economy. He recognizes our moral obligation to combat climate change and supports efforts to place limits on carbon pollution.  Additionally, he is a strong proponent of reducing our reliance on dirty fossil fuels by investing in clean energy industries and advancing our energy efficiency technologies.

In Congress, Kilmer has continued his work from the Washington state legislature, restoring and protecting the Puget Sound, our oceans and natural landscapes for generations to come. He founded the Puget Sound Recovery Caucus and has worked to safeguard Washington’s fishing and shellfish industries by introducing legislation that will help monitor ocean acidification. Congressman Kilmer also advocates for our magnificent public lands, including sponsoring legislation to enhance protections in the Olympic National Forest, which will create jobs and protect these iconic Washington State forest and rivers for all to enjoy.

Congressman Kilmer’s voting record earned him a 93% score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard in 2013, his first year in Congress. The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record.
