Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Deb Haaland for Congress in New Mexico’s 1st District.

“Deb Haaland’s commitment to environmental justice will make her an excellent representative for New Mexico,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “She will be a champion for America’s clean energy future and a voice for the communities who are the most exposed to the devastating effects of climate change and pollution. We know she will be an important ally in Congress and are delighted to endorse her campaign.”

“Deb Haaland has a proven record of standing against threats to New Mexico’s air and water,” said Conservation Voters New Mexico Executive Director Demis Foster. “She is committed to defending our public lands, cultural values, and communities. We would be thrilled to see her continue that work in Congress.”

“For me, the fight for our planet is personal,” said Deb Haaland. “My parents instilled respect and reverence of the land and water into my siblings and I from a very young age. It was important, because their parents and grandparents sustained themselves from the land. My family history makes the LCV Action Fund endorsement extremely meaningful to me and my campaign. If elected to Congress, I will work alongside LCV to address the pressing challenges facing our environment and communities because of climate change. I will fight for a swift transition to 100% renewable energy, be fierce on the front lines to keep public lands in public hands, and to continually pressure the EPA Administrator to do his job and protect our land, water and air.”

Deb Haaland has been an activist and leader in both the tribal community and the Democratic Party for her entire life. She previously worked as a tribal administrator and administered a local service provider for adults with developmental disabilities. Deb became the Chair of the New Mexico Democratic Party in 2015. She has made environmental issues a major focus of her campaign and is committed to fighting for 100% clean energy and protecting New Mexico’s precious freshwater resources. Deb is a member of the Pueblo of Laguna, and if elected she would be the first Native American woman in Congress.
