Washington, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will support sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of Leslie Cockburn for Congress in Virginia’s 5th District.
“Leslie Cockburn’s career has been about holding people and governments accountable, and she will continue to do that in Congress,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President Tiernan Sittenfeld. “We know we can always count on her to fight for clean air and water, and to stand up to polluters. We are excited to support her campaign.”
“Leslie Cockburn has been an important ally in the fight against dangerous pipeline projects in Virginia,” said Virginia League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Michael Town. “She knows what it takes to protect our lands and waterways and we can count on her to continue standing up for a safer and healthier environment for all Virginians.”
“I am honored to receive LCV Action Fund’s endorsement,” said Leslie Cockburn. “Over the past year, I have put more than 52,000 miles on my car, crisscrossing our district to listen to and work with people from Lawrenceville to Union Hill, and Warrenton to Danville. They emphasize that promoting clean and healthy environment and standing against unnecessary projects — like the proposed pipelines that would destroy private property for corporate gains, with no benefit to our Commonwealth — are top priorities. I am looking forward to working closely with LCV Action Fund throughout the campaign and with LCV as a member of Congress to champion laws and policies that protect our air, land and water, and to promote racial, social and environmental justice. Together, we can make a real difference for my district and beyond.”
Leslie Cockburn worked as an investigative journalist for 35 years. Over the course of her distinguished career, she won two Emmys, two George Polk Awards, two Columbia Dupont journalism awards, and the Robert F. Kennedy Award. She lives in Rappahannock County, where she has been active in conservation and community service, serving on the boards of the Piedmont Environmental Council and the Krebser Fund. In Congress, Leslie Cockburn will fight for strong environmental policies that benefit all Virginians.
