LCV Action Fund Endorses Senator Jeanne Shaheen for Re-Election

Oct 9, 2014

WASHINGTON, DC— The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, today announced its endorsement of Jeanne Shaheen for re-election to the U.S. Senate from New Hampshire. Senator Shaheen works tirelessly to protect our clean air and water, combat climate change, and promote our nation’s clean energy economy.

“Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s leadership in the Senate is essential to the fight against climate change,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “She is a forward-looking leader who has worked tirelessly to promote a clean energy economy and protect our air, water, and special places.”

“I’m honored to receive the endorsement of an organization that does so much to protect New Hampshire’s environment and promote a stable energy future for families and businesses across our state,” said Senator Shaheen. “The threat of climate change is very real, and here in New Hampshire, we’re already seeing consequences. That’s why I’ve fought to invest in energy efficiency and promote investments in clean energy while working to close taxpayer subsidies to Big Oil. Protecting our environment and supporting our economy go hand in hand.”

During her first term, Senator Shaheen has been one of the Senate’s key champions for a clean energy economy.  She has led the charge on bipartisan legislation to promote energy efficient technologies, and she co-sponsored a bill that would create a national renewable energy standard.  Senator Shaheen is also a member of the Senate Climate Action Task Force, and in March of this year, she joined 30 of her Senate colleagues in an overnight Senate session featuring floor speeches pushing for action on climate change.

Before becoming a U.S. Senator, Shaheen was the first elected female Governor of New Hampshire.  During her tenure as Governor, she helped pass the Clean Power Act, the first piece of comprehensive legislation in the U.S. to reduce the emissions of four major pollutants from power plants.  Her administration also implemented energy efficiency programs that saved New Hampshire families and businesses $1 billion.

Senator Jeanne Shaheen’s voting record has earned her a perfect 100% on LCV’s 2013 National Environmental Scorecard and an impressive lifetime score of 95%. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
