Washington, D.C.– The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) congratulates Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Representatives Tom Suozzi (NY-03), Greg Meeks (NY-05), Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Yvette Clarke (NY-09), Dan Goldman (NY-10), Jerry Nadler (NY-12), Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), Ritchie Torres (NY-15), Pat Ryan (NY-18), and Paul Tonko (NY-20) and Representatives-elect Laura Gillen (NY-04), George Latimer (NY-16), Josh Riley (NY-19), John Mannion (NY-22) and Tim Kennedy (NY-26) on their wins in New York. We look forward to working together in the 119th Congress and beyond to continue making progress on addressing the climate crisis and protecting our democracy.
“New Yorkers are already experiencing the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act, through the rebate programs that launched earlier this year,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “Now, New Yorkers have voted to continue to make an affordable clean energy future possible and LCV could not be more excited to continue working with all of these champions to tackle the climate crisis and increase access to clean air and water for all communities across the Empire State.”
LCV Victory Fund invested over $1.1 million to defeat Dirty Dozen member Rep. Anthony D’Esposito and elect Laura Gillen. This spending included a digital ad program that featured both ads supporting Gillen and ads opposing D’Esposito, as well as a field program which knocked on over 63,000 doors and had over 14,000 conversations. Additionally, LCV Victory Fund invested more than $620,000 to defeat Rep. Brandon Williams and elect John Mannion, which included an expansive field program that resulted in over 53,000 doors knocked and over 7,200 conversations with voters. LCV Victory Fund also invested nearly $500,000 to elect Josh Riley against Marc Molinaro, which included a broadcast ad on Molinaro’s corporate PAC ties. All spending in these races also included a GOTV Mobilization program in partnership with Priorities USA Action to turnout young voters and voters of color. Lastly, during the special election in February LCV Victory Fund spent $730,000 to elect Tom Suozzi and defeat then-Rep. George Santos, which included a digital ad and an expansive field program.
LCV’s GreenRoots member mobilization program turned out LCV members to volunteer for the Gillibrand and Mannion campaigns as part of a nationwide field program to help elect environmental champions that engaged 10,000 total LCV members.
GiveGreen — a partnership between LCV Victory Fund and NRDC Action Votes that helps grassroots donors directly contribute to pro-environment candidates including in New York — raised a record $58.5 million for the 2024 cycle.
These are just some of the climate champions who won up and down the ballot in New York, demonstrating that leaning into environmental issues is both good policy and good politics.
