Mail and phone program will reach nearly 75,000 drop-off voters

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced the launch of a nearly $100,000 voter turnout operation to elect Emily Cain (ME-2) to Congress on November 4th. The program will reach nearly 75,000 drop-off voters across the district by Election Day.

“Bruce Poliquin’s climate science denial and opposition to clean energy would make him one of corporate polluters’ biggest allies in Washington. We’re fighting back to ensure that Maine families know Emily Cain fights for them by taking on polluters and working to tackle the climate crisis,” said Daniel J. Weiss, LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns. 

The program includes three flights of mail and a phone program focusing on turning out likely Cain supporters who voted in the 2012 Presidential election but did not vote in the 2010 midterm election. The mail program will reach registered Democrats with a partisanship score of 60-100 and turnout score of 30-80, and the phone program will reach registered Democrats with a partisanship score of 45-100 and a turnout score of 30-80.

Cain’s opponent, Bruce Poliquin, is a climate science denier who has said “I personally am suspect” that humans are responsible for climate change.  Poliquin has also criticized Maine state legislators for “advancing the development of expensive wind power,” and signed the Americans for Tax Reform pledge, which protects billions of dollars in subsidies for oil companies. 

This program continues LCV’s involvement in the race. In May, LCV named Cain’s primary opponent, Troy Jackson, to their Dirty Dozen, which targets candidates for Congress — regardless of party affiliation — who consistently side against the environment and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. LCV launched a five-flight mail campaign highlighting Jackson’s anti-environmental voting record in the State House and State Senate. The campaign was the biggest investment by an outside group in the primary race. 

LCV Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, endorsed Cain for Congress in March, highlighting her support for action on climate change and advocacy for a transition to a clean energy economy that will create jobs in Maine and across the country. Cain’s strong environmental voting record in the Maine Legislature has earned her a 91% lifetime score on Maine Conservation Voters’ Scorecard.
