Richmond, Virginia – LCV Victory Fund announced today that Senate candidate Corey Stewart in Virginia will take the third spot this year on its signature Dirty Dozen list. Since 1996, the Dirty Dozen has featured some of the most anti-environment candidates running for office across the country. Stewart, a firm climate denier, is slated to appear at a forum on climate change in Vienna this evening.
Stewart has aligned himself with white supremacists and declared that he was “Trump before Trump was Trump,” making it clear that in the Senate he would stand by Trump’s cuts to climate protections, reckless attacks on the EPA, and pro-polluter corruption. Stewart has also been critical of Virginia’s membership in the U.S. Climate Alliance, joining Trump in insisting that climate change is a hoax.
“Corey Stewart has consistently positioned himself against our most vulnerable communities,” said Pete Maysmith, LCV Victory Fund Senior Vice President for Campaigns. “From his support for dangerous white nationalist groups to his climate denial — despite sea level rise threatening Virginia’s coastal communities — Stewart’s rhetoric and positions show a complete disregard for Virginians’ health and safety.”
“We’ve already seen the effects of climate change in our state, and recent extreme weather events in Virginia remind us just what’s at stake,” said Lee Francis, Communications Manager at Virginia League of Conservation Voters. “We’ve seen rising temperatures and rising sea levels and the Trump administration is making things worse. We need a senator who will stand up to Trump’s environmental attacks, and Corey Stewart is anything but the champion Virginia needs.”
LCV Action Fund endorsed incumbent Senator Tim Kaine for reelection in Virginia, citing his proven record as a champion of clean energy and climate action.
