Washington D.C. – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) along with Reps. Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Dina Titus (D-NV), and Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) held a tele-press conference to mark the centennial of the National Park Service and call for the protection for more special places. 

On the call, LCV and these members of Congress discussed the importance of our national parks, the need to build an all-encompassing parks system, which is reflective of our country’s rich history and diverse cultures, and to highlight the efforts to permanently protect spaces, including the Greater Grand Canyon, Gold Butte, and Castner Range.

“Establishing Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument will protect the natural and cultural resources of the Grand Canyon region and diversify our national parks system at the same time,” said Congressman Grijalva. “That’s why I’ve been working with Native American and environmental advocates for the past 18 months to highlight the importance of getting this done before President Obama leaves office. Naming this monument will defend our magnificent open spaces from privatization, save our cultural heritage from vandalism and neglect, preserve centuries of history, and tell an important story about the future of our public lands. I look forward to seeing it through.”

“Gold Butte is Nevada’s piece of the Grand Canyon, and we need to protect this incredible landscape for future generations,” said Congresswoman Titus. “The cultural and historical resources there provide a glimpse into Nevada’s past; preserving them and the precious open spaces and wildlife will provide a boost to our outdoor recreation economy and help us tell our story for years to come.”  

“Castner Range is the crown jewel of West Texas,” said Congressman O’Rourke. “It deserves to be protected and preserved in its natural state.” 

“Over the past 100 years, our national parks have been a huge part of our nation’s history, and in the next 100 years we need to continue to grow our parks system to ensure that we are not only safeguarding the diverse cultures and history of our country, but are protecting more magnificent landscapes as well,” said LCV President Gene Karpinski. “No one understands this more than President Obama, who has already permanently protected over 265 million acres of land and water and worked to build a more inclusive parks system by designating places like the Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument, the Stonewall National Monument, the César E. Chávez National Monument, the Pullman National Monument, and more.”  

“As the National Park System heads into its next 100 years, it’s our duty to preserve these parks and natural resources by recognizing the value that protected land has for our generation and generations to come,” said VP & National Director of LCV’s Chispa Program Jennifer Allen. “Our legacy should be to protect our nation’s treasures, the places providing all our communities with exceptional recreational opportunities to gather, celebrate and explore, and a chance to get back to our native roots.”

The Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument will help to permanently protect land and waters sacred to Native Americans, sensitive habitats, and historic places surrounding the Grand Canyon National Park. As Ranking Member on the House Natural Resources Committee, Congressman Grijalva has been a leading voice in helping to establish the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument. This monument is supported by regional tribes and people in Arizona and across the county.  

The Gold Butte National Monument will conserve the unique scenery, wildlife, cultural heritage as well as the historic and prehistoric resources in southern Nevada. Gold Butte is where visitors can go hiking, hunting and birdwatching while learning about this historic mining town from the early 1900’s. Senator Harry Reid (D-NV), Congresswoman Titus, and people all over Nevada and the Southwest are working to protect Gold Butte for generations to come.

The Castner Range National Monument will safeguard this beautiful landscape that has important ecology, geology and waterways as well as significant cultural sites and historic military sites in El Paso, Texas. Congressman O’Rourke along with community leaders, local business, conservation groups and neighborhood associations all support designating the Castner Range National Monument, because it will preserve this pristine landscape that has significant archaeological and historical resources as well as military sites and ancient rock imagery sites.

Centenario del Servicio de Parques Nacional: LCV y los Reps. de EE.UU. Grijalva, Titus, y O’Rourke Hacen un Llamado para Nuevos Parques 

Washington D.C. – La Liga de Votantes por la Conservación del Medio Ambiente  (LCV, por sus siglas en inglés) junto con los representantes Raúl M. Grijalva (D-AZ), Dina Titus (D-NV), y Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) llevaron a cabo una tele-conferencia de prensa para marcar el centenario del Servicio de Parques Nacionales y hacer una llamada para la protección de más lugares especiales.

Durante la llamada, LCV y estos miembros del Congreso hablaron sobre la importancia de nuestros parques nacionales, la necesidad de construir una sistema de parques que abarque todos, que sea un reflejo de la rica historia y diversas culturas de nuestro país, y para resaltar los esfuerzos para proteger de manera permanente los espacios, incluyendo el Greater Grand Canyon, Gold Butte y Castner Range.

“Establecer el Monumento Nacional Patrimonio del Greater Grand Canyon protegerá los recursos naturales y culturales de la región del Grand Canyon y al mismo tiempo, diversificará nuestro sistema de parques nacionales,” dio Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva. “Es por esto que he estado trabajando con los nativo americanos y defensores del medio ambiente por los últimos 18 meses para resaltar la importancia de hacer esto antes de que el Presidente Obama deje su cargo. Nombrar este monumento defenderá nuestros magníficos espacios abiertos de la privatización, salvará nuestro patrimonio cultural del vandalismo y la negligencia, conservará nuestros siglos de historia, y contará la importante historia acerca del futuro de nuestras tierras públicas. Espero verlo suceder.”

“Gold Butte es nuestra parte del Grand Canyon en Nevada, y necesitamos proteger este increíble paisaje para futuras generaciones,” dijo la Congresista Dina Titus. “Los recursos culturales e históricos que se encuentran ahí nos dan un vistazo al pasado de Nevada; conservar estos recursos al igual que los campos abiertos y la vida silvestre le dará un impulso a nuestra economía de recreación al aire libre y nos ayudará a contar nuestra historia en los años por venir.”

“Castner Range es la joya de la corona del Oeste de Texas,” dijo el Congresista Beto O’Rourke. “Merece ser protegido y conservado en su estado natural.” 

“Durante los últimos 100 años, nuestros parques nacionales han formado una gran parte de la historia de nuestra nación, y en los próximos 100 años necesitamos continuar creciendo nuestro sistema de parques nacionales para garantizar que no solamente estemos salvaguardando las diversas cultura y la historia de nuestro país, sino también protegiendo más paisajes magníficos,” dijo el Presidente de La Liga de Votantes por la Conservación del Medio Ambiente (LCV) Gene Karpinski. “Nadie entiende esto mejor que el Presidente Obama, quien ya ha protegido de manera permanente más de 265 millones de hectáreas de tierras y agua y ha trabajado para construir un sistema de parques más incluyente al designar lugares como el Monumento Nacional de Igualdad de las Mujeres Belmont-Paul, el Monumento Nacional Stonewall, el Monumento Nacional César E. Chávez, el Monumento Nacional Pullman, y otros más.”  

“Mientras que el Sistema de Parques Nacionales (NPS, por sus siglas en inglés) se dirige a sus siguientes 100 años, es nuestro deber conservar estos parques y los recursos naturales reconociendo el valor que las tierras protegidas tiene para nuestra generación y para las generaciones por venir,” dijo la VP y Directora Nacional de Chispa de LCV, Jennifer Allen. “Nuestro legado debe de ser en proteger nuestros tesoros, los lugares proporcionando a todas nuestras comunidades con oportunidades recreativas excepcionales para reunirse, celebrar y explorar, y la oportunidad de volver a nuestras raíces nativas.”

El Monumento Nacional Patrimonio del Greater Grand Canyon ayudará a proteger permanentemente aguas y tierras sagradas para los nativos americanos, hábitats sensibles, y lugares históricos que rodean el Parque Nacional del Grand Canyon. Como miembro de mayor rango del Comité de Recursos Naturales de la Cámara de Representantes, el Congresista Grijalva ha sido una voz líder en ayudar a establecer el Monumento Nacional del Patrimonio del Grand Canyon. Este monumento es apoyado por tribus regionales y personas en Arizona y por todo el país.

Monumento Nacional de Gold Butte preservará el escenario único, la vida silvestre, la herencia cultural así como los recuses históricos y prehistóricos en sur de Nevada. Gold Butte es en donde los visitantes pueden ir a escalar, cazar y la observación de aves mientras aprenden acerca de la historia minera del pueblo de principios de los años 1900. El senador Harry Reid (D-NV), la Congresista Titus, y personas de todo Nevada y del Suroeste están trabajando para proteger Gold Butte para las generaciones por venir.

El Monumento Nacional Castner Range salvaguardará este hermoso paisaje que tiene una ecología, geología y canales importantes así como sitios culturales significativos y sitios militares históricos en El Paso, Texas. El Congresista Beto O’Rourke junto con líderes comunitarios, negocios locales, grupos de conservación y asociaciones de vecinos apoyan la designación de Monumento Nacional de Castner Range debido a que conservará este paisaje prístino que tiene recursos arqueológicos e históricos significativos así como sitios militares y galerías de rocas antiguas.
