Sierra Club & LCV Action Fund Unite to Endorse Senator Murray for Re-Election

Jan 15, 2016

WASHINGTON, DC—The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund and the Sierra Club, which represent two of the nation’s leading environmental organizations, joined forces today to endorse Senator  Patty Murray for re-election to the U.S. Senate from Washington. Senator Murray is a champion for growing our clean energy economy, tackling the climate crisis and safeguarding our public lands.

“Senator Murray has an outstanding record, and is a real leader in protecting our planet and combating climate change head on,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President for Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “She works hard to reduce our reliance on dirty fossil fuels and invest in a clean energy economy that creates good paying jobs in Washington and across the country.”

“We are very pleased to announce today that the Sierra Club officially endorses Senator Patty Murray for re election in both the primary and general elections,” said Ken Gersten, Sierra Club Washington Chapter Political Chair. “We are confident that she will continue work to protect our families’ health, air and water, and build a clean energy economy that works for Washington. We will do everything we can to ensure Senator Murray is re elected.”

“Senator Murray is a staunch advocate for Washington communities, our environment and our economy,” said Washington Conservation Voters Executive Director Shannon Murphy. “She works hard to protect our magnificent public lands, waterways and wildlife for future generations to enjoy.”

“As a U.S. Senator, it is my duty and my honor to fight for policies that make our world a better place for future generations, and I could not be more thrilled to be recognized by these premiere environmental advocacy organizations,” Senator Murray said. “Thank you to the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and Sierra Club for your stewardship and your support. Together, we will continue our work to address some of the most pressing issues of our time.”

As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development, Senator Murray has been a leader on clean energy issues. She has helped to secure tax credits and billions in funding for the expansion and development of the booming clean energy industry. These efforts to invest in a clean energy economy have helped to create jobs while helping our country effectively tackle the climate crisis.

“We are deeply grateful to Senator Murray, a true champion for the environment who will fight to protect Washington’s clean air, clean water, our climate and natural treasures,” said Sierra Club National Political Action Committee Director Sarah Burton.

Senator Murray has led efforts to safeguard Washington’s precious natural landscapes by strengthening protections for Wild Sky Wilderness, Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the Middle Fork Snoqualmie and Pratt Rivers, Illabot Creek and Puget Sound. She has also worked to secure funding for the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund and cleanup of the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. Additionally, she has led efforts to designate the Hanford Reach National Monument, which helps protect the Columbia River and key salmon spawning areas, and helped to create and support the Northwest Straits Initiative.  She is the prime sponsor in the Senate of legislation to protect wildlands and rivers on the Olympic Peninsula that provides the watersheds for some of the state’s most productive salmon and steelhead runs.

Murray has earned an 89 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. The non-partisan Scorecard is a nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a Member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.
