WASHINGTON – The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) today announced that Republican Senate candidate Terri Lynn Land has been added to LCV’s trademark Dirty Dozen program this cycle. The Dirty Dozen targets candidates— regardless of party affiliation — who consistently side against the environment and are running in races in which LCV has a serious chance to affect the outcome. Last cycle, LCV defeated 11 of the 12 Dirty Dozen candidates.

“Terri Lynn Land has an extreme anti-environment agenda that only a Koch Brother could love.  She ignores the proven science of climate change, and opposes commonsense limits on carbon pollution from power plants.  Not surprisingly, Land’s campaign benefited from millions of dollars spent on her behalf by her polluter allies, including the Koch Brothers’ front group,” said Daniel J. Weiss, LCV Senior Vice President for Campaigns.

“Michiganders are struggling to cope with climate-fueled extreme weather, including flash floods in Detroit and algae blooms in the Great Lakes. Meanwhile Terri Lynn Land continues to do the bidding of the Koch Brothers by ignoring climate science and promoting their extreme agenda. Terri Lynn Land is an ally of polluters, not Michigan families,” said Lisa Wozniak, Executive Director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.

Land took thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from the oil billionaire Koch Brothers, and she’s sided with them by ignoring climate change science at a time when climate change threatens the Great Lakes. She’s also blasted the EPA’s proposed Clean Power Plan as “an enormous regulatory attack on coal” that is part of President Obama’s “War on Michigan,” even though the plan would save lives, reduce asthma attacks, create jobs, and save billions of dollars annually in health costs. 

She even ran a campaign ad that attacked Rep. Gary Peters for supporting the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which included the largest investment in clean energy in U.S. history. Michigan received nearly $9 billion for clean energy and other projects during the depths of the recession.

LCV recently launched a $400,000 television ad campaign highlighting the support Land’s Senate campaign is receiving from the out’of-state oil billionaire Koch Brothers, who have used Michigan as a dumping ground for pollution. The first ad, “Koch Land,” was released on August 22nd and the second ad, “Koch Land 2,” was released on September 3rd. 

Last month, LCV and the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) announced the launch of a $2.1 million mail and voter turnout operation to defeat Land and elect Rep. Gary Peters to the U.S. Senate on November 4th. The program will begin in October and will contact more than a million registered voters across the state by Election Day.
