Garcia

Robert Garcia is the former mayor of Long Beach, California and has a history of championing environmental causes.

Garcia was born in Lima, Peru, and immigrated to the United States at age five. He graduated from California State University, Long Beach, and received a master’s degree at the University of Southern California and a Doctor of Education degree from California State University, Long Beach. In 2009, he was elected to the Long Beach City Council in a special election to replace Bonnie Lowenthal. He was reelected in 2010, and in July 2012, he was unanimously elected to a two-year term as vice mayor of Long Beach by the City Council. In 2013, Garcia won the election to become the Mayor of Long Beach.

As a representative, Garcia will fight for continued progress on bold and effective climate policy that is in line with the Green New Deal’s vision to significantly reduce climate pollution and equitably addresses the impacts of pollution and climate change on the health and well-being of communities.

Garcia joins the U.S. House to represent California’s new 42nd district formed by the merging of the districts represented by Representatives Lucille Roybal-Allard and Alan Lowenthal, who are both retiring. They earned lifetime scores of 96% and 98% lifetime scores, respectively, on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard. Garcia is the first LGBTQ+ immigrant elected to Congress.
