WASHINGTON, DC— The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) Action Fund, which works to elect candidates who will implement sound environmental policies, announced today its endorsement of two candidates from Maryland for re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives: Steny Hoyer (MD-05) and John Delaney (MD-06).

“Representatives Hoyer and Delaney know that a thriving economy and a healthy environment go hand-in-hand and have been real leaders in Congress elevating the need to take immediate action to address the climate crisis,” said LCV Action Fund President Gene Karpinski. “They have been pivotal in moving the conversation forward on the urgent need to move towards a future powered by clean energy so that we can leave a safe and healthy planet for our children and grandchildren.”

“Representatives Hoyer and Delaney fight every day for Marylanders and our great state,” said Maryland League of Conservation Voters Executive Director Karla Raettig. “They are vocal advocates in our fight to combat climate change and have led the charge in Washington to preserve the air, water, wildlife and open spaces that make Maryland such a special place to live, work and raise a family. Our communities benefit from their strong and steady leadership.”

“I’m proud to stand with the League of Conservation Voters in fighting for a cleaner, sustainable environment,” said Congressman Hoyer. “The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the natural ecosystems that sustain our planet are ours to save or squander, and we must make sound choices that protect our environment for the benefit of future generations.  I look forward to continuing to work closely with the League of Conservation Voters and other advocates from across Maryland and our country to promote policies at the federal level that conserve the environment and tackle the critical challenge of climate change.”

“I am proud to be endorsed by the League of Conservation Voters Action Fund and stand with them on protecting the environment,” said Congressman John K. Delaney. “Responding to climate change is essential to our economic health and our public health and the consequences of inaction will lead to increased risk of natural disasters and threats to our national security. The heavy threat posed by climate change reminds us how much we could lose by refusing to act, which is why I’ve authored legislation to reduce carbon pollution and led the effort in Congress to establish a new clean energy goal of 50% clean energy by 2030. We need to do all we can to ensure that we leave a healthy planet to our children and future generations.”

As part of Democratic leadership and during his long and distinguished service in the U.S. House of Representatives, Representative Hoyer has consistently fought against polluter-backed attacks on our nation’s bedrock environmental laws. Hoyer has been integral to the House passage of important national climate and clean energy legislation.  Close to home, Hoyer has secured millions of dollars to clean up the Chesapeake Bay and the Patuxent, Potomac, Anacostia, and St. Mary’s Rivers.  He has also helped add 8,000 acres to the Patuxent Wildlife Refuge, expanded and protected Piscataway Park, and acquired 6,000 acres in Charles County for the Douglas Point Project. Hoyer has earned an 81 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.

As a member of the Sustainable Energy and Environment Coalition (SEEC), Representative Delaney has been a strong voice for climate action in the U.S. House. Drawing on his successful business career, he has been a powerful advocate for climate action and growing the clean energy economy. Delaney has been a strong supporter of the EPA’s Clean Power Plan and the landmark Paris Climate Agreement. He is a leading voice in Congress pushing for a price on carbon pollution and introduced the State’s Choice Act which would make clear that an excise tax on carbon can be used to comply with the Clean Power Plan. Delaney has earned a 90 percent lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard.

The non-partisan Scorecard is the nationally accepted yardstick used to rate members of Congress on environmental and clean energy issues. Based on key environmental votes in the House and Senate, it is often used by the media to quickly describe a member’s record. For more information, visit https://scorecard.lcv.org.

Hoyer and Delaney are featured on LCV Action Fund’s GiveGreen website, the only bundling website devoted exclusively to raising money for environmental champions for federal office.
