Washington, D.C. – Tonight in Virginia Beach, both candidates for Congress in Virginia’s 2nd District participated in a forum to discuss regional environmental issues and what they will do in Congress to combat them. During this forum, Representative Scott Taylor distorted his record and claimed to be a champion for the Chesapeake Bay.

“The Chesapeake Bay already faces numerous challenges, like growing dead zones and polluted runoff, and these problems will only be exacerbated by a changing climate,” said LCV Action Fund Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Tiernan Sittenfeld. “Yet, Scott Taylor has voted time and time again to gut safeguards that are critical for restoring and protecting the Bay. Representative Taylor can try to obfuscate all he wants, but the numbers speak for themselves: he has an abysmal 6% lifetime score on LCV’s National Environmental Scorecard and has repeatedly voted against clean water, clean air and action to tackle the climate crisis.”

Tonight’s debate is yet another example of a vulnerable incumbent attempting to wash away a history of anti-environmental votes during an election year. And it isn’t the first time Rep. Taylor has distorted the facts to distract from his anti-environmental record in Congress. Just this week, his campaign sent mailers that misled voters on his environmental record. The truth is, Rep. Scott Taylor has consistently sided with polluters and corporate interests at the expense of the health of the Chesapeake Bay and his own constituents.

The constituents of Virginia’s 2nd district deserve someone who cares about safeguarding our clean air and clean water all the time, not just in election years. That’s why LCV Action Fund endorsed Luria in June– she will be a tireless defender of Virginia’s air and water and is committed to protecting the Chesapeake Bay, banning offshore drilling, and investing in renewable energy so our planet is protected for generations to come.
