Washington D.C. – In response to the final July hearing of the U.S. House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol, the League of Conservation Voters issued the following statement from Advocacy Director for Judiciary & Democracy Doug Lindner:

“The January 6th Committee presented evidence beyond reasonable doubt that former President Donald Trump and his allies intentionally led a seditious conspiracy based on a Big Lie to overturn a fair and free election. Trump knowingly deceived the nation, attempted to overthrow our democracy, and undermined the fundamental right of the people to elect our own leaders. In each hearing, we heard extensive evidence of how Trump, his advisors, his political allies, and white supremacist extremists led systematic efforts to maintain power using violence and intimidation on January 6th and in the months leading to it, laying the groundwork for this attack even before Election Day. They were willing to break any law necessary — including ongoing witness tampering during these proceedings. As the hearings come to a close, the former president, his allies, Trump insurrectionists, and all who played a role in this attack on our country must be held accountable. Every MAGA Republican in Congress, in the executive branch, and in state and local governments who supported the Big Lie had a hand in the violent and deadly insurrection. Many insurrectionists and election deniers are on the ballot this fall, and we will not let them forget their role in this attack.

“We thank Chair Thompson, Vice Chair Cheney, and all the members and staff of the Select Committee for their important work to bring to light the full story of what happened on that terrible day and in the months leading up to January 6th. They have chosen to put the integrity of our democracy, their Constitutional oaths, and the good of this country above partisan politics to expose the truth about the conspiracy that led to the January 6, 2021 attack.

“The way our nation moves forward from here will determine the fate of American democracy. It is more important than ever to combat the relentless election sabotage, intentional disinformation, and voter suppression efforts intended to silence the voices of communities of color, communities with low wealth, and other marginalized people, who also bear the greatest burden from the climate crisis and environmental injustice. To protect the people’s right to choose our own leaders, we must elect pro-democracy senators, representatives, governors, state legislators, secretaries of state, state attorneys general, state supreme court justices, and local election officials this fall, and we must act to restore a pro-democracy, pro-environment majority to the captured United States Supreme Court.”
